Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the local jurisdiction for Aug. 16. The health unit is also reporting there are now 21 active cases being monitored.

This total includes any cases that may have been registered over the weekend. The health unit no longer report COVID-19 case numbers on Saturdays and Sundays.

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 17 months ago, there have been 2,224 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,203 of those cases are now resolved.

There are also now 1,029 cases that are "confirmed or presumed to be" positive for variants of concern. This is an increase of eight new cases over Friday's online report.

The details were outlined on the PHSD website.

As to the location of the cases, six new cases were reported to have occurred in Greater Sudbury, two in the wider Sudbury district and two cases on Manitoulin Island. With respect to the possible causes of recent cases, PHSD reported there were five cases related to close contact of a confirmed case, two cases that were travel related, one case related to an outbreak, one case with no known epidemiological link and one case under investigation.

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 728 total cases (Increase of seven).

The next highest group number was 559 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (Increase of one).

The next highest number was 533 cases for the 19 and under age group (Increase of one).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 305 cases total (Increase of two).

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 96 cases (Increase of one).

The numbers above might not correspond to other numbers being reported because the health unit does report fresh numbers daily, as they happen. Some of the numbers are delayed.

With respect to COVID-19 testing, 276,029  tests have been performed in the PHSD region; an increase of 1,046 since the last testing results on Friday. New vaccination data showed there were 240,708 total accumulated vaccines in the PHSD jurisdiction. This includes 109,384 residents that are fully vaccinated.

The health unit webpage has also reported there is a current active COVID-19 current outbreak on Manitoulin Island at the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

PHSD also listed several recent exposure risks. The details can be found on the daily COVID summary page.

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 16 there are four patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. One of those patients is in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this, there are four admitted patients being tested for COVID-19. HSN said none of those three patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time.

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 526 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported zero deaths had occurred in the past 24 hours.
