The Capreol 100 Committee has announced that the Stanley Cup will be visiting the town of Capreol on April 1, 100 years to the day since the community was officially incorporated as a town.

"We want to thank the team at the Hockey Hall of Fame very much for accommodating uswith a visit to our town," said committee member Frank Mazzuca.

"We are looking forward to having our citizens and children spend time with Lord Stanley."

Despite being a small community, Capreol has produced its share of professional hockey players including Doug "Diesel" Mohns, Fred Boimistruck, Floyd Thompson, Jim Mayer, Joffre Desilets, Jim Farelli and the Horeck brothers, Peter, John and Danny. Capreol is also home to former World Hockey Association referee Ray Thomas.

Bringing the Stanley Cup to Capreol to celebrate their 100th anniversary was the suggestion of the late Don Brankley, who had the idea more than a year ago during a Capreol 100 meeting.

Brankley, who served as the official trainer for the London Knights of the OHL for more than 38 years, agreed to lead the charge and see if he could lean on any of his former contacts to help make the project a reality.

The untimely passing of Brankley in June 2017 was a major blow to the community and to the group, but the committee persevered wanting to complete the project for him.

"This is really special," said Sharon Brazeau, Brankley's sister. "Don would be so thrilled that this is happening. It's really great seeing this all come together."

The Stanley Cup display highlights a number of activities planned for the day which are all being offered free of charge to the public thanks to sponsorship from the City of Greater Sudbury and the Capreol Old Timers Hockey Tournament.

The Stanley Cup and a community skate will be taking place between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Capreol Red Hats will be providing a number of children's games, crafts, balloon animals, face painting as well as popcorn and birthday cake between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the upper hall.

The committee asks that children are accompanied by an adult.
