These Chelmsford kids love reading: $3K grant helps them be bookworms

Desjardins Foundation gives funds to school for literacy challenge

Chelmsford Public School has received $2,975 from the Desjardins Foundation to promote reading. A cheque presentation took place at the school on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Staff and students at Chelmsford Public School have been participating in the Great Reading Race since September. It’s a school-wide literacy challenge where readers accumulate kilometres.

“Implementing a friendly challenge is a fun way to encourage students to read,” said Chelmsford Public School Principal Pablo Gil-Alfau, in a press release. “So far, our readers have travelled all around the world. We now have our sights set on the moon!”

Funds from the Desjardins Foundation were used to purchase a new book for each student in the school. Books were chosen based on student interest and reading level. Older students selected the books for students in Kindergarten to Grade 1 based on personal reading interest surveys.

“We are grateful to the Desjardins Foundation for supporting our ongoing efforts to promote a love of reading,” said Gil-Alfau. “As reading is the foundation for all learning, this donation will have a positive and powerful impact now and into the future.”
