The Very Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle has been appointed provost of Thorneloe University.

The Very Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle has been appointed provost of Thorneloe University, assuming his role on a part-time basis on June 1.

The provost will function as the chief academic administrator of the university and serve as the Director of the School of Theology and Dean of the Thorneloe Chapel.

The provost will work collaboratively with interim president Stacy Sathaseevan and executive administrator and registrar Jessica Lamirande.

Koyle holds a Doctor of Ministry from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary as well as degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Western University.

He has been attached to the Thorneloe School of Theology as an Adjunct Professor for the past year. Koyle continues to also serve as an adjunct professor at Huron University College in London and has held numerous other academic posts over the past 30 years.

He is an ordained presbyter (priest) according to the rites of the Anglican Church of Canada. He will continue to serve in his full time ministry as Dean of Algoma and Incumbent, St. Luke's Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie.

“We welcome Jay Koyle to his new position,” said an email from Brian Koivu, chair of Thorneloe’s board of governors.

Thorneloe University is one of three educational institutions that were formerly federated with Laurentian University, providing courses counting toward Laurentian degrees.

However, that all changed in 2021, when Laurentian severed the federation agreement with Thorneloe as well as with Huntington University and the University of Sudbury that went back to the university’s founding.

Thorneloe’s remaining students are studying theology.

The Anglican church-affiliated Thorneloe offers certificates for Anglican layreaders, as well as diplomas and bachelor’s degrees in theology. These programs are conferred directly by Thorneloe, so were unaffected by Laurentian’s actions.
