Three people shortlisted for Jack Layton award

The award is being presented by the Sudbury New Democrats to recognize outstanding community members who have dedicated their efforts to building a more equitable society.

All three finalists fight for income equality, labour rights, and for an end to poverty, the organization stated in a press release. They come from the Occupy movement and from hospice care, but are united by a dedication to social justice.

“Jack Layton’s commitment to social justice touched the nation,” Richard Eberhardt, president of the Sudbury NDP, said. “In his name, we are proud to recognize those who are carrying on his work.”

The Leadership award will be given to a community leader who has made a substantial contribution to social justice, and has inspired and enabled others to participate

An Outstanding Achievement award will be given to a group or organization in the Sudbury community which has successfully promoted social justice in its activities. Nominees are:
- Justice and Freedom for John Moore
- Myths and Mirrors
- Ontario Coalition Against Replacement Employees

A youth award will recognize a person under 30 who has participated in social justice activities and has encouraged awareness of social justice among their peers. Nominees are:
- Nicole Beaulieu
- Max Merrifield
- Laurel O’Gorman

The inaugural Jack Layton Award for Social Justice will be presented at an awards banquet scheduled for March 1, 6 p.m., at the United Steelworkers Hall. Members of provincial and federal parliament, community leaders, and award nominees will attend.
