Throwback Thursday: A look back at Laurentian University

See how our largest post-secondary institution has changed over the years

It may surprise people outside of our city to know that not everyone in Greater Sudbury works in the mining industry.

These days, our economy has diversified to the point where the retail, healthcare, government and education sectors each employ large segments of the workforce.

Education alone employs around nine percent of the Sudbury population between two public school boards, two catholic school boards and three post-secondary institutions.

And the largest among them all is Laurentian University, which employs almost 2,000 people and has a student population of close to 10,000.

To honour Sudbury's largest institute for higher learning, we've dug up some photos to show how Laurentian has evolved over the decades.

Take a look in this week's episode of Sudbury.com's Throwback Thursday in which, this being the year of Canada's 150the anniversary, we celebrate a little bit of Greater Sudbury's history.

Thank you to the Greater Sudbury Archives and Laurentian University for supplying some of the photos that appear in this week's episode.
