It's a chance to hear a good speaker, enjoy a good meal and support the work of The Salvation Army. The annual Red Shield Appeal Luncheon will be held on May 5 at the Holiday Inn on Regent Street, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Guest Brian Burditt will give a speech entitled, “Rebuilding after the Tsunami.”

The luncheon raises awareness of the work done by The Salvation Army and extends appreciation to those who donate and assist the organization, stated a news release.

Tickets for the lunch are $25 each or $200 for a table of eight. There is no fundraising at the event.

Luncheon speaker Burditt was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. He was appointed director of World Missions in July, 2002 and is currently serving as chairman of the Tsunami Relief Committee for The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory.

Burditt also serves on a variety of committees and boards, including the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Through The Salvation Army’s International Emergency Services, he co-ordinates disaster relief efforts with organizations such as the Red Cross.

The Salvation Army Child Sponsorship Program is also supervised by Burditt. This program has provided over 2,600 young people with much needed practical assistance, while planning for a brighter and more productive future, stated the release. The children in the program receive assistance in a variety of ways including food, shelter, clothing, education and medical provision.

In the last few years 150-170 guests have attended the Red Shield lunch and many more can be accommodated.

In 2007, The Salvation Army, Sudbury Centre provided 29,556 nights of accommodation, including 3,245 for rehab, 2,872 for male youth, 13,553 for men’s shelter and 9,886 for women and families.
