Reviews must stop until government provides a stable funding formula for rural schools, Larry Killens says

A Rainbow District School Board trustee plans on putting forward a motion today to stop all accommodation reviews of the board’s schools.

Citing too many desks and not enough pupils, the Rainbow Board is looking at closing or consolidating 12 schools it operates in the region.

In a release to media, Killens said he plans on introducing that motion today.

He said he agrees with Steve Clark, the Conservative Leeds-Grenville MPP, that the province impose a moratorium on accommodation reviews for rural schools until a long-term plan is developed.

Such a plan should establish a stable, sustainable funding formula for rural areas, Clark argues.

Earlier this year, the province changed its funding formula for smaller schools, eliminating top-up funding and putting added pressure on already cash-strapped rural schools.

In his motion, Killens says given these facts, Rainbow Board should cease all accommodation reviews until “parliamentarians have the opportunity to resolve educational issues.”
