Two businesspeople to be honoured by SAMSSA

The Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Service Association (SAMSSA) will induct two businesspeople into the association's hall of fame during its annual general meeting Dec. 9.

The Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Service Association (SAMSSA) will induct two businesspeople into the association's hall of fame during its annual general meeting Dec. 9.

One of the inductees is Peter Matusch, president of the CCM Group of Companies, which includes CCM Contracting, Equipment North and Metex Manufacturing.

A news release put out by SAMSSA says that from very modest beginnings in 1978, Matusch has “built the former Copper Cliff Mechanical into one of the premier Northern Ontario industrial contracting and equipment supply firms.”

With a workforce peaking at over 400 tradespeople, staff and professionals, the group has completed projects of up to $15 million, and manufactured equipment installed in industrial facilities across the world.

Matusch, who began his career as a welder in the Kingston shipyards in the early 1960s, “is a testament to what can be accomplished through hard work, a lot of practical ingenuity and a commitment to always performing above the customer's expectations,” stated the news release.

The other inductee is Ron Miller, founder of Miller Technology, which is based out of North Bay.

Miller, who was born in Hanover in 1945, earned a mechanical engineering technologist diploma from Mohawk College in 1967, and immediately started working for Timberjack Equipment in the special equipment division in Woodstock.

In 1968, Miller moved to North Bay to work for Jarvis Clark and led the design team for 10 years.

In 1979, Miller started Miller Technology, his own design consulting business.  After 30 years in the business, the company employs 30 people with two operations in North Bay and a distribution facility in Sudbury.

The company is now operated by his two sons, Chad and Kent, while Miller enjoys his retirement.
