Ukrainian church invites everyone to a Sunday barbecue

Grateful for the support following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sudbury’s Ukrainian community wants to show its appreciation

St Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church is bringing Ukrainian food and fun to Camp Villa Maria on Richard Lake this Sunday, July 10, for a picnic.

There will be raffles for prizes, as well as games for all ages and anyone is invited to join.

Andrew Kosar, the event organizer and member of the parish pastoral council, said the church wanted to organize an event to create a sense of community in Sudbury, especially after receiving large amount of support from Sudbury with the current crisis in Ukraine.

This picnic is an opportunity for the church to welcome newcomers to Sudbury and make the annual picnic just a little bit more special.

“We generally have a church picnic every year, and it's attended by mostly parishioners,” Kosar told Sudbury.com in a phone interview. “And this year with everything that's going on in Ukraine, with the fact that we have some new Ukrainian families in Sudbury… We wanted to really broaden our approach and see if we can just have a more community focused event just in terms of welcoming new immigrants and in terms of showing appreciation for the community in general.”

In terms of entertainment, Kosar said there will be musicians to lead a sing-a-long that Kosar has dubbed a Ukrainian karaoke (or ‘Ukraine-aoke’ as he dubbed it). A divine liturgy will also take place at 10 a.m. with Reverend Father Piotr Bodnar. A barbeque lunch will be held at noon with other Ukrainian foods available for purchase and eat on site.

The food items that were listed are pyrohys (pierogis), keilbasas (a type of meat sausage from Poland), holobsti (cabbage rolls) and kabusta (sauerkraut). The pyrohys and holobsti will also be available for purchase for the dozen for people to take home. Standard burgers, hotdogs and chicken kabobs will also be available.

Camp Villa Maria is located on 2646 Richard Lake Dr.
