Vale's seeding program takes flight Sept. 17

Vale’s aerial seeding program is set to take flight starting Monday, Sept. 17, according to a news release.

The seeding program targets barren land for reclamation around Vale's operations. The program, which started in 1990, has treated more than 6,700 acres of land to date. This year’s treatment area will be approximately 450 acres, just north of Coniston.

While every effort will be made not to fly over nearby residential areas, local residents may notice low-flying aircraft in this part of the city, said the company. Residents are advised that this is part of Vale’s normal land reclamation activities and the low flight paths are necessary for the work to be effective.

Weather permitting, flights are expected to begin Sept. 17. Planes will depart from a private airstrip in Coniston and deposit payloads of agricultural limestone, fertilizer and grass seed native to Sudbury on the designated treatment areas. Work is expected to continue for 10 to 14 days.
