Things have returned to normal at Health Sciences North this afternoon after an issue with the hospital’s servers this morning.

HSN spokesperson Jason Turnbull said at around 6 a.m. this morning, the hospital’s servers began to malfunction and the servers crashed, taking all of HSN’s sites offline.

The hospital called a Code Grey and initiated downtime procedures to get everyone off the systems while the facility’s information technology crew went to work. A Code Grey is called whenever a critical system (electricity, heating, medical gas, communications, etc) fails.

It was discovered that a ventilation issue caused the servers to overheat and shut down. Once the issue was identified, it was dealt with.

“By 12:40 p.m., the Code Grey was declared over and all systems were successfully restored,” Turnbull said.

During the downtime, urgent and emergency services continued, though some virtual appointments were impacted, he said.

“Our teams are following up to reschedule those appointments with impacted patients.”
