Wal-Mart holds official opening

Although its doors have been open to thrifty customers for seven weeks and counting, managers at the new Wal-Mart location in New Sudbury held an official grand opening Thursday morning.

Ward 5 Councillor Doug Craig represented the city for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Head office officials from Mississauga also attended the opening.
Craig called Wal-Mart an economic retail driver for northeastern Ontario.

?Sell lots,? Craig said to the Wal-Mart employees gathered at the ceremony. ?Let those cash registers ring.?

A number of cheques totalling $5,040, were presented to various charities such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the Alzheimer?s Society. The money was raised during fundraising events organized by Wal-Mart staff.

The 130,000 square foot store has more than 300 employees and is located at the New Sudbury Centre.

Wal-Mart Canada was founded in March of 1994 with the acquisition of the Woolco division of Woolworth Canada Inc.

In the 1960s, founder Sam Walton and his wife purchased the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas.
