Walden bike club 'witches' have fundraising ride for the Sudbury food bank ~ PHOTOS

Women riders dressed as witches spread some Halloween fun and fear to raise awareness for cycling club

No, you weren't seeing things. More than a dozen women dressed as witches were riding their bikes and brooms through the streets of Sudbury's south end on Saturday.

Stacey Greene, a spokesperson with the Walden Mountain Biking Club (WMBC), said it was originally planned as another popular health and fitness ride.

"Well it started out as a fun ride with friends but it quickly turned into an event. And we've turned it into a little bit of a fundraiser for the foodbank," said Greene. The women gathered at Lo Ellen secondary school parking lot at  noon Saturday before setting off on their ride.

Greene said it wasn't planned as an official bike club event but as things turned out, all the women riding on the witch patrol were WMBC members.

Greene said it appears the ride might become an annual event, given the apparent fun and popularity among the membership.

"So today, we will ride around Ramsey Lake and a bit of a pass along Junction Creek and raise some money for the food bank," said Greene.

She said members had collected pledges from friends and family members as part of an overall cash donation.

The women are encouraging more members to step up and join, regardless of their skill level as riders. Members will be pleased to mentor other women along at WMBC in the spring and summer. The women riders get together every Monday night during riding season for fun and fitness rides.
