All classes for in-person learners at Walden Public School will be delivered remotely to and including Friday, March 12, the Rainbow District School Board announced late Sunday.

The situation will be reviewed for the following week.

The school board said it is currently assessing the impact of another confirmed case of COVID-19 at the school. This case is being considered as a possible variant of concern.

There have been three confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Walden Public School in the past week. The individuals are self-isolating and being monitored by Public Health Sudbury & Districts.

While there is no evidence of widespread transmission of COVID-19 at Walden Public School at this time, variants of concern are highly contagious.

All teachers and support staff will work with students online this week.

As a result of the confirmed case reported today, three cohorts are required to self-isolate. Those include:

  • The Grade 1 French Immersion class in Room 120 (self-isolate until March 18)
  • The Kindergarten French Immersion class in Room 134 (self-isolate until March 17)
  • The Grade 3*** English class in Room 204 (self-isolate until March 17)

The affected students, their parents/guardians and relevant staff have been notified and have received a letter from Public Health with specific guidance. Public Health will directly contact all parents/guardians of students and all school personnel who have been identified as close contacts.

Public Health continues to investigate and monitor the situation.

The Rainbow board also announced Sunday that while there is no confirmed case of COVID-19 at R.L. Beattie Public School at this time, there is a pending test result that could affect one cohort at that school.

In an abundance of caution, students in the kindergarten class in Room 122 will learn remotely until further notice. The board said it will provide an update when it has more information.

Sudbury Student Services Consortium also announced several more bus route cancellations Sunday. These are:

  • Routes L033, L802 and L803 - cancelled until March 12 inclusively
  • Routes L131 and L810 - cancelled until March 15 inclusively
  • Routes L121 and L128 - cancelled until March 18 inclusively
  • Route L200 - cancelled until March 16 inclusively
