Sudbury's two Walmart locations will follow other retailers and start charging for plastic bags on May 16.

Both the South End and New Sudbury Walmart Supercentres will charge customers five cents per plastic bag starting on that date.

In a note to customers, Walmart says the extra charge is to reduce plastic bag waste and keep the planet healthier.
Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags to avoid the extra cost. Walmart has said it will offer reusable bags for 25 cents once it starts charging for plastic bags.

Walmart customers can bring any extra plastic bags to both locations, where they will be recycled. Walmart said funds from plastic bags will support recycling projects that turn them into useful items like construction materials and products made from recycled plastics.
