FedNor recently announced funding of $474,800 to Neureka Research Corporation for the research and development of a test kit to detect oxidized cholesterol levels in human blood.

The project will create jobs in Sudbury and develop a valuable product for the ever-expanding area of biotechnology.

Based on patented methodology from the University of Turku, Finland, the test will be marketed to research organizations to confirm the value of the test. After seeking regulatory approval, Neureka plans to market the test to the diagnostic sector.

The blood test for oxidized low-density lipoproteins is a better indicator of the potential for heart disease than the current test which focuses on low-density lipoproteins.

Sisters Danielle Audet and Monique Paajanen, owners of the Backyard Birder Nature Gift Shop are celebrating their fifth year in business.

Lopes Mechanical Ltd. has given the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre $50,000 in partnership with the Heart and Soul Campaign. In recognition of this donation, the centre is naming its outdoor garden, the Lopes Garden and Seating Area.

Murdoch Group-National Car Rentals has donated $25,000 to the Heart and Soul Campaign.
The campaign’s goal is $17. million for the super hospital, the cancer centre and the St. Joseph’s long-term care facility.

Despite a year-over-year decline in the City of Greater Sudbury single-housing starts in September, were 36 per cent ahead of 2001 levels and 33 units above average levels for the past five years, according to preliminary figures from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Single-detached starts are up 43 per cent over the same nine-month period in 2001. Building permit volumes suggest activity is not expected to slow down during the fourth quarter.

Single-detached permits to Sept. 30 were up 37.1 per cent.

CMHC will hold an outlook conference Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Cavern at Science North.

The Lumber Building Materials Association of Ontario, Northern District, recently donated $1,500 to the Alzheimer Society-Manitoulin. The money was raised at the group’s annual golf tournament and will be directed to the society’s capital campaign for a new centre.

The Bargain! Shop Holdings Inc. plans to open three new stores in Ontario this month, including one at 3454 Errington Ave. in Chelmsford. The Bargain! Shop is a discount general merchandise shop that sells seasonal products, toys, food, bed and bath items, houseware, electronics, clothing and footwear as well as health and beauty products.

Human Resources Development Canada is providing College Boreal with $239,997 for a youth internship program. The program will provide 12 underemployed or unemployed young people with the training they need to start their own businesses.

Moncion’s Your Independent Grocer in Hanmer, owned and operated by Marcel and Linda Moncion, is celebrating the completion of renovations at the store this Saturday, starting at 8 am with the ceremonial ribbon cutting. There is fun planned for the whole family all day.
The store now has a one-hour photo lab, a pharmacy, a Meals to Go section and a eat-in cafe. Other store highlights include dry cleaning services, a children’s clothing section and a full service bakery and meat counters.
