Rainbow Routes Association is setting the wheels in motion to maintain its top five ranking in the Commuter Challenge.

The Commuter Challenge is a week-long event held across Canada, where participants trade in their cars for more environmentally-friendly modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, carpooling, telecommuting or using transit, said Samantha Baulch, of Rainbow Routes Association.

The challenge runs June 1-7. Last year, Greater Sudbury ranked No. 5 for number of participants in Ontario, and No. 2 among smaller cities, said Baulch.

Science North claimed bragging rights with the most participation in Sudbury, but there are many businesses and organizations gunning for that right this year, she said.

Interested businesses and organizations can register at www.commuterchallenge.ca, where they can also track their participation.
