The Coalition for a Livable Sudbury wants to hear about about areas in the city that need a little bit of extra attention when it comes to snow clearing.

Living in the north offers the opportunity of a wide range of enjoyable snow-related activities, but navigating snow and ice on sidewalks or jumping over a snowbank is can present difficulty for many Sudburians, said a press release.

Getting around Greater Sudbury in the winter can be a challenge for many seniors, parents with strollers, those with mobility issues and those using a wheelchair or scooter.

Last month, Greater Sudbury council announced they will be providing more funding for winter sidewalk clearing

"Is there a location where you see lots of pedestrians having difficulty, or a sidewalk many people need that is not getting cleared?" said a news release from Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.

"Are strollers, wheelchairs and scooters constantly getting stuck in your neighbourhood? Are schoolkids walking to school on the street?  Are private snow-clearing companies filling sidewalks with snow after the city has cleared them? Do snow banks make it impossible or dangerous for you to travel?"

You can share what barriers you are facing as you try to get around Greater Sudbury in winter by sending your photos and comments to Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury via email at [email protected]

If you are on Facebook, you can join the “Walk Safe Sudbury” group to join the discussion about what it’s like to be a pedestrian in Greater Sudbury both in winter and summer.  Let your councilor know where you have seen issues too.

“Just yesterday I witnessed a mom pushing her child in a stroller on Regent Street,” said Lilly Noble, co-chair of Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.

“Soon she got stuck and reverted to pulling the stroller then pushing it again. It was a challenge for her.

“We invite citizens to share their experiences and priorities as the city begins to consider where best to put additional resources for winter maintenance of sidewalks.”
