Updated: Highways 101 and 655 re-opened, but many northern roads still closed

The OPP advise that the following highways in this area of the province are closed as of Monday morning:

  • Highway 144 between Timmins and Cartier
  • Highway 17 between White River and Marathon
  • Highway 101 between Matheson and the Quebec border 
  • Highway 11 between Nipigon and Cochrane
  • Highway 631 between Highway 17 and Highway 11 in Hornepayne
  • Highway 11 between Highway 65 and Highway 112 in New Liskeard
  • Highway 11 from New Liskeard and Matheson

The following highways has been reopened:

  • Highway 6 between Birch Island and South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island) is now open
  • Highway 11 is now open between Hearst and Longlac
  • Highway 17 between Batchawana and Wawa is now open.
  • Highway 11 is now open from Hearst to New Liskeard
  • Highway 101 between Chapleau and Timmins
  • Highway 655 between Highway 11 and Timmins

OPP North has reported through their twitter account that Hwy 11 between Matheson and Cochrane has been reopened.

All other previously mentioned roads remain closed at this time.

Hazardous weather conditions have resulted in the closure of multiple Northern Ontario highways, affecting travel throughout the area. 

The following highways have been closed due to white-out conditions: 

  • Hwy 11 between Longlac and Cochrane 
  • Hwy 11 between Matheson and Cochrane 
  • Hwy 17 between White River and Wawa 
  • Hwy 17 between Batchawana and Wawa
  • Hwy 101 between Chapleau and Wawa 
  • Hwy 101 between Chapleau and Timmins 
  • Hwy 101 between the Quebec border and Matheson 
  • Hwy 101 between Hwy 144 and Chapleau
  • Hwy 631 between Hwy 17 and Hwy 11 in Hornepayne
  • Hwy 655 between Hwy 11 (Cochrane) and Timmins 
  • Hwy 144 between Cartier and Timmins 
  • Hwy 144 between Hwy 101 and Cartier

There has been no notice as to when these highways will be re-opened.

Motorists found driving on a closed highway could receive a fine of $110 and three demerit points.
