The University of Sudbury honoured outstanding students and employees during its annual awards ceremony March 22.

The most prestigious student award presented by the federated university is the Sword of Loyola Award.

The symbol of the sword is linked directly to the university's history and relationship to the Society of Jesus.

This award was established in 1966 by the Board of Regents to recognize a graduating student who is an outstanding example of the University's ideal in scholarship, leadership qualities, and concern for others.

This year, the award was presented to Stepfanie Johnston, a student who stands out by her dedication to make an impact in Indigenous communities through healthcare provision, advocacy, and health promotion, as well as her level of involvement on campus and in the community at large. Johnston states that her main interest is to uplift and empower Indigenous people.

The university also presents its yearly Caritas Award, recognizing the long-standing service of employees.

The Caritas Award is presented to an employee who embodies the university’s core values and was presented this year to Pierre Brideau.

Brideau is a long-time employee with a developed sense of humour who shows great dedication and care for the entire University of Sudbury community. He is always ready to help in various ways, including sharing the wealth of knowledge he’s acquired over numerous years at the university.

As for recognition of long-standing service, philosophy professor Lucien Pelletier was recognized for his appreciated and impressive 25 years of service.

“The much-anticipated yearly awards ceremony provides an occasion for our students and staff members to shine,” said University of Sudbury president Sophie Bouffard, in a press release.

“It is with great pride that we recognize the impressive leadership, dedication, involvements and great academic achievements we see within our university community. We wholeheartedly thank all those that contribute to this institution and congratulate all the 2018 recipients.”
