Women?s group honours 11 community leaders

The Sudbury Business and Professional Women?s Club honoured 11 women Tuesday evening for their leadership in the community. The group paid tribute to the late Joanne Nother as a leader in advocacy in equity and human rights.

The Sudbury Business and Professional Women?s Club honoured 11 women Tuesday evening for their leadership in the community.

The group paid tribute to the late Joanne Nother as a leader in advocacy in equity and human rights. Diagnosed with MS when she was 25, she became an advocate for the disabled. She was 47 at the time of her tragic death in a fire Feb. 27.

Musician Iona Reed-Pukara was recognized for her leadership in entertaining and teaching music. A talented accordion player and pianist, she and her late husband, Karl, taught music to hundreds of Sudbury students.

Three women who paved the way for others to work in untraditional jobs at Inco Ltd. were honoured. Catherine Mulroy, Sonja Ferlotte and Susan Vallier began working at the Copper Cliff copper refinery in 1974.

Maureen Lacroix was recognized for her leadership in health care, social housing, the arts and education.

Capt. Dianne Krucker, an officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, psychologist and Northern Life columnist Chris Nash, Cathy Nadijwon, president of
Blaze Information Technology, Rachel Prudhomme, a leader in municipal and professional mining engineering, and Northern Life managing editor Vicki Gilhula were also honoured.

The awards ceremony was part of the women?s group annual High Tea Extravaganza evening.

BPW Sudbury is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2005.
