The Sudbury YMCA is launching two new programs that will benefit girls and seniors.

These two programs are called Amazing Me and the Digital Inclusion, Social Connections and Opportunities Hub (DISCO).

Amazing Me is a program designed to empower girls to participate in sport in a healthy and positive way. The curriculum has a focus on confidence, positive self-esteem, healthy participation, coaching and more.

The program will be taught in person with physical distancing. The program begins Oct. 29 and costs $10 for members, $25 for public.

DISCO, with funding support from the Sudbury Community Foundation and in partnership with Canadore College, The Village, focuses on teaching seniors how to use technology safely through educational workshops, providing them a way to connect with their loved ones virtually by lending devices to use and getting active with a short workout session.

Advanced registration is required. Physical distancing practices are in place, equipment will be sanitized after each use and hand sanitizer will be available. Masks are required.

DISCO begins Nov. 4 at the Sudbury YMCA, and Nov. 6 at the Valley East Public Library.

“We are thrilled that we are able to launch the Amazing Me program in Sudbury, North Bay and Timmins this fall,” said Helen Francis, president and CEO for the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario. “The program is designed specifically to support and encourage young girls to actively participate in sports while empowering them through self-confidence, positive body image, healthy mind, body and spirit.

“The DISCO program promises to greatly assist seniors with social connection, which is critical to support mental health and quality of life and we see this as outreach that will be required well beyond the pandemic.”
