ASHAWASEGA, Augustin E. - 1943 - 2012 - Gus' life journey ended March 15th, and will continue to live in the hearts and minds of his wife Bonnie, family and friends. Gus had a quirky sense of humour that family and friends will remember for years to come. In addition to his quick wit, he was a respected leader in Toronto's Aboriginal community by sharing knowledge, experience and leadership in the establishment of Aboriginal agencies and advocacy in human rights and race relations. Gus was the founding President of NA-ME-RES, Anishnawbe Health Toronto, and Native Child & Family Services Toronto. In addition, he was a board member of the Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto, and the Toronto Aboriginal Management Board. In 2003, Gus was the recipient of Toronto's Access, Equity & Human Rights Award (Aboriginal Affairs). Our sincere thanks to Sunnybrook Hospital's Dialysis Unit for consistent professional care and moral support they showed Gus for over 15 years. To honour Gus' request, there be no funeral service.
