Baxter, Alice

August 31, 2009 97

BAXTER, Alice Kathleen - With sad hearts we announce the passing of Alice Clarke Baxter on August 26th, 2009 at the Leacock Care Centre in Orillia in her 97th year. Alice, born in Toronto and raised in Winnipeg, was the eldest child of Bob and Kate Delaney. Dear sister of Evelyn and Allan, both of Winnipeg and predeceased by sister Eileen and brother Bob. Beloved wife of the late Rt. Rev. Neville Clarke (1975) and Kenneth Baxter (1987). Alice was the much loved mother of John (wife Nadia) of Peace River, Alberta, Richard, predeceased (wife Susan) of Orillia, Ontario, Alice-Mae (husband Peter Varpio) of Sudbury, Ontario and Walter (wife Evelyn) of Baxter, Ontario. Alice was joyful to be “Grandma“ to her 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and will be deeply missed. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom have special memories of time with “Auntie Alice“. From 1938-75 she worked with Neville in the mission fields of Northern Ontario doing all the things that a missionary's wife must do as well as being a teacher, the organist and upon occasion the primary first aid giver in the community. Alice was active in the life of the Anglican Church of Canada and was Diocesan president of the Women's Auxilary for many terms. After Neville's death she moved to Toronto where she continued her mission work to the First Nations people, under the auspices of the Diocese of Toronto. Alice was a woman of courage and generosity: her cup was always half full: she believed in the inherent goodness of man: she leaves behind a legacy of love, faith and family. May she rest in peace and rise again in glory. The late Mrs. Alice Baxter will rest at St. David's Church, 133 James St., Orillia on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 11 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 1 o'clock. Cremation will follow. Interment will be held in Moose Factory, Ontario at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Jude's Cathedral Diocese of the Arctic would be gratefully appreciated.
