The world has lost a great man.  It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Douglas Bird, our much beloved husband, father, and grandfather.  Doug was born on August 2, 1935, in Cobourg Ontario to George Reid Bird and Lily Folkard, both predeceased. Doug passed away peacefully in the morning hours of April 17, 2024, in Sudbury Ontario, surrounded by his adoring family as he made his journey home.

Doug is survived by his beautiful Ollie, his wife of 64 years; his two children, Sharon Banfield (David) and Bryan (Brigitte); and grandchildren Sarah Bird (Noah), Evan Bird (Ivy), Nick Banfield and Kaden Banfield. Predeceased by his brothers James (Shirley predeceased) and Maurice (Edith predeceased) and many nieces and nephews.  In his final days, Doug had the joy of seeing his two nieces, Karen Dwornik and Jan MacInnes, who visited from Ottawa and Frankford.

It was the late 1950’s when Doug left the family farm in Frankford, Ontario and travelled to Sudbury to work at CP Rail in Capreol.  And, as many men did in those days, he then found employment at INCO, working as stationary engineer at the smelter before retiring from the nickel refinery with the maintenance mechanics.

It was at a dance at the Mine Mill Hall that young Douglas first laid eyes on a beautiful young lady, his beloved Olive (Ollie) and the rest as they say is history.  They were blessed with many years together.  They enjoyed spending time with family and friends curling and golfing, and endless nights of rummy 500 and country music.  In their retirement they loved to travel, either abroad or short jaunts to their favourite casino.

Doug was a man of quiet faith and service and gave much of his time to his church, Church of the Resurrection, acting as secretary treasurer and church warden for many years.  Additionally, he was a dedicated volunteer with the Northeast Cancer Centre for fifteen years, as well as numerous other organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Heart and Stroke foundation, and the Special Olympics.

Dad spent his last couple of years at St. Joseph’s Villa where he made many new friends. Ever the gentleman, everyone loved Doug.  The special community of resident family members and staff that bonded at the Villa was a great comfort to Doug and his family and we are grateful for them.

At Doug’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service.  Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society through Lougheeds.
