BROWN, Norman Erle Howard - In loving memory of Norman Erle Howard Brown March 20, 1925 to August 10, 2012 Norm passed away peacefully on Friday, August 10th, 2012 at the age of 87 years. Born in Saskatoon, Norm spent his childhood on farms in Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia before coming to Toronto as a teenager. While working for Caplan's Radio in Toronto, Norm discovered an interest in electronics that continued for the rest his life. In 1961, Norm entered the emerging field of broadcasting when he started with CKSO Radio and Television. His career took him to various places in Ontario but the job the he was most proud of was a short stint at the Ontario School for the Deaf (Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf) in Belleville where Norm was instrumental in starting a program that used multimedia as an instruction technique. He then moved to North Bay and Sudbury where he worked for Mid Canada Television installing and servicing transmitter and microwave sites across north eastern Ontario. Norm retired from broadcasting in 1993. Norm was an avid ham radio operator, using the call sign VE3ED. He will be missed by his sister Sylvia McTavish of Kelowna; sons Terry of Toronto and Neil of North Bay; and grandchildren Lindsay and Jeff. Norm was predeceased by his wife Reta (née Gallagher) in 2003. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Pioneer Manor in Sudbury where Norm resided for the last five years. Private cremation to follow.
