BURNS, Doreen (née Thompson) - Passed away peacefully on January 23, 2013 in the palliative care unit of Pioneer Manor. Her beloved husband, Jim, passed away in 2009, after 57 years of marriage. Doreen is survived by her loving children, son Bob (Carole) and daughter Nancy (Joe); grandchildren Brett, Courtney (Jordan Pogue), Connor, Brianne (Brad Morrison) Burns and Jake and Charlie O'Connor; great-granddaughter Isabella Pogue; sibling Glenn Thompson in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Born in Beaver, Manitoba in 1926, Doreen grew up on a farm with her three older siblings, Evelyn, Isabel and Jack and younger brothers Wesley and Glenn. She attended Teachers' College in Winnipeg and began teaching in rural Manitoba. In 1948, Doreen re-located to Ontario where she met her future husband, Jim Burns, whom she married in 1952. She worked as a supply teacher while raising Bob and Nancy. During her life in Sudbury, Doreen served in as Regent for the Alexander Ramsey Chapter of the IODE; was active in the Anglican Church Women's group; and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Extendicare. Both Jim and Doreen were founding members of the Church of the Ascension and active members of the congregation throughout their lives. Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 1476 Sparks St., in New Sudbury on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Society would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME.
