Although many of you know Wayne as 'The Man behind the Lakers Sports Organization,' Wayne was an Elite athlete in his own right. He excelled at hockey, competitive swimming, baseball and basketball. As a senior on the Sudbury Technical Basketball team, he once scored 50 points in a playoff game. He was well known as a sure handed infielder, and as a lead-off hitter, who could lay down a bunt and beat out the throw. He was a member of the North Bay Garland Pepsi's who won the Canadian Intermediate Basketball Championship. He was then elected to the North Bay Hall of Fame. After attending Queens University he married Lucy Eadie, (Lahaie), and Wayne started work at Falconbridge as a Machinist. However a career as a miner was not to be and he returned to school at Flint College in Michigan. He attended classes during the day and worked at Chrysler as machinist on second shift to pay the bills. Upon obtaining his teaching credentials Wayne accepted his first teaching assignment at Algonquin High School. Shortly thereafter he transferred closer to home and taught machine shop at Chelmsford High School. Throughout his time at Chelmsford he coached the girls' basketball program. Always a believer in 'continuous education“, Wayne continued to take courses culminating in Graduation with a Master's in Education. Throughout his academic career Wayne was a IAABO certified basketball official, and refereed the local University, College and High School games. After retiring from teaching, Wayne started his second career as “The Man behind the Lakers“, tirelessly working behind the scenes, fundraising, Managing, and promoting hockey, baseball and girls basketball. Wayne was a recipient of the prestigious Angus Campbell Merit Award by the NOHA and the SMHA honoured him by launching the annual “Wayne & Lucy Eadie Spirit of the Game Hockey Tournament“. In a recent newspaper article Wayne provided the following quote. “I would like to be remembered as a developer of sports, giving kids an opportunity“. And so he shall.
