Renate was of the Lutheran faith. Daughter of the late Mrs. Helene Koelbel (predeceased 1995), she came to Sudbury from Germany with her family at the age of ten. A graduate of Sudbury High School and the University of Toronto, Renate taught modern languages in Sudbury for several years. She is survived by one brother (Tom Koelbel) and his family.
