HOLMES, Audrey

August 16, 2010 83

HOLMES, Audrey “June“- 1927 - 2010 Born in Sault Ste. Marie on June 27, 1927 and died peacefully August 15, 2010 at the Palliative Care Unit at the Sault Area Hospital with her children by her side. To the end, she was first and foremost a Mother, very proud of her six children, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Beloved mother of David (Janie), Kathie, Pat Sutherland (Brad), Pete (Colleen), Pam (Douglas Irish) and Steve (Hillary). Loving wife of the late Donald Holmes (June 18, 2010). Beloved sister of Joyce Russ of Sault Ste. Marie. She spent her childhood in the Sault and Thessalon area with her Draper relatives and then her family moved to Toronto at the beginning of the Second World War. She often spoke of her experiences while working as a young woman at the Connaught Labs at the time of Banting and Best. While in Toronto, she met Donald Holmes at a YMCA dance and they married in September 1948. She followed and supported her husband through many moves and career changes while bringing up her six children. She had many fond memories of travels with her Mom, the late Sarah Turner, and friends on various trips with the Sunshine Club around North America. After living in several towns and cities in Ontario, she still considered Sault Ste. Marie to be her home. She had recently moved to Collegiate Heights Retirement Home, built at the site of the school she attended as a young girl. She demonstrated a quiet strength and determination throughout her life that was evident in the way she chose to die. Once she decided to leave and had said her goodbye, she left us quickly. We will miss her dearly. Friends may call at the ARTHUR FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE (492 Wellington Street East, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 2L9, 705-759-2522) on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 from 7 - 9 pm. Memorial service from the chapel on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 11 am.
