Houston, June (nee Sutherland)

On Sunday, March 3, 2024 in her 96th year our beloved mother June Pamela Houston (Sutherland) passed away. June was a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, a dear sister, aunt, and friend. As the matriarch of our family, she leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and strength.

June was born in Cobalt, Ontario on June 5th, 1927 to James and Ida Sutherland (predeceased). The Sutherland family made their home in Schumacher, Ontario and included five siblings: Peggy (George) Don (Alice), Gervis, Mary (John), May (Jim who is the lone survivor.) Together, they were both a loving family and lifelong friends.

As a young woman, June met Thomas Wardlaw Houston, a handsome young navy seaman returning from service in WW11 and the rest is history. Thomas and June had three daughters: Sandra, Janice, and Cheryl (Murray.) June worked hard to provide the best for her girls and was an incredibly dedicated employee of the CIBC until her retirement. As the family grew Tom and June welcomed their beloved grandchildren: Darren (Charla) Jason, Courtney (Jason) Hillary (Craig), Marissa (Anthony) and Meaghan (Andrew). June was a devoted Grandmother who attended hockey games, recitals, graduations with pride and joy. Great -grandchildren and great-great grandchildren including Dustin, Keenan, Griffin, Isla, Eloise, Mia, Keeanna, Nova, Brin Kell, Alex, Isobel, Samantha, and Jason Jr. were also blessed to have a special relationship with Nana June.

Our Mother valued and treasured her friendships, many of which have been lifelong. June was also known for her generosity and volunteerism that kept her busy during her retirement. She enjoyed knitting for the infants in the NICU, volunteered with the Cardiac Unit and many Heart and Stroke patients and as a member of the Pets as Therapy Organization in Sudbury with her beloved West Highland Terrier "Charm". During this part of her life, she also developed hobbies such as gardening, baking delicious treats and crafting that she enjoyed with her daughters and sister Mary.

June's unwavering support and guidance touched the lives of all who knew her. We will forever cherish her kindness, generosity, wisdom, and countless memories we shared together. Though she may be gone, her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us each day. May she rest, knowing she was deeply loved, appreciated, and respected.

Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hospice or Sick Kids would be appreciated.

A private Celebration of Life has been planned for June of 2024.
