The family announces with sorrow the passing of David Hrushowy, age 92, who died peacefully on May 23, 2023, at Pioneer Manor in Sudbury.

Born in Sifton, Manitoba, he was predeceased by his parents, John and Palania Hrushowy; by his brothers John, Henry, Willy, and Ted; and by his sisters Anne (Stanko), Zenia (Petroff) and Edna (Schneider). He was also predeceased by his partner of many years, Edith Harris.

As a very young man, David began working for CN rail as a fireman. He soon became an engineer and worked for CN rail until his retirement. He loved his job, made lifelong friends, and had many stories to tell of his exploits on the tracks.

David loved his family, kids and animals, gardening, nature, fishing, and the great outdoors. He was always cheerful and wanted to help others. Ever the optimist, his only disappointment in life was the performance of the Leafs, though he remained loyal to the end!

In 1977 David purchased a lot on the shores of lake Nagagamisis, near Hornepayne. Over the years, David almost single handedly built his beautiful summer home that he loved and enjoyed for many years, until his years told him that it was time to take life a little more easily. Although David suffered several injuries and health issues over the years, he never complained.

In 1947, David was a leader of what had to be the first student strike in Canadian history. The school trustees in Sifton had decided to dismiss David’s high school teacher. The students walked out of school and vowed not to return until the teacher was rehired. A town meeting was held, and the trustees reinstated the teacher. The story was reported in the Winnipeg newspapers. Truth be told, the teacher was James Stanko, who was married to Dave's sister Anne!

David’s calling cards were his warm genuine smile, his kind and open heart that he wore on his sleeve, his generosity, and his contagious happiness. When you were around David, he made you happy.

Dave is survived and lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, and their families, and by Edith’s children, and their families, and by his many friends whose lives he also touched.

Arrangements for David’s Celebration of Life will be made by the family later. For those wishing to do so, donations in David’s memory may be made to the Sudbury Food Bank, or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Jackson and Barnard funeral home.
