It is with deep sadness that the family of Elsie Ingrid Jacobson (Niemi) announce her passing after a brief but valiant fight at Health Sciences North on August 12, 2021, at the age of 79 years.
Beloved mother of Dana (Andi) Kleiser and Neil (Michelle). Proud Mumma of Christian, Jenna, Ava and Tristen and caregiver to numerous relatives. Fondly remembered by niece Shelley (Sean) Sweet, nephew Darren (Nathalie) Niemi and dear friends Myrna and Douglas Gingrich. Pre-deceased by her cherished brother George, her parents Nestor and Eini (nee Hallikainen) Niemi and her former husband, David Jacobson.
A graduate of Sudbury Tech and a medical lab technologist by training, she spent many enjoyable years working at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, building life-long friendships with her colleagues.
Residing in Lively for most of her life, she enjoyed blueberry picking and taking saunas at her camp on Black Lake. Once she retired, she was able to pursue her many interests and live life to its fullest.
A committed member of her Walking Group, she took joy in researching new and meaningful routes as well as exploring familiar paths. Never proud of her results on the golf course – she deemed her outings with the Golfing Ladies a key source of Vitamins D & F (“Friends”).
As a passionate reader, Elsie spent her final years revisiting ALL of the books on her bookshelf, reading her dear friend Marion’s magazines cover-to cover and providing deliveries to those in need via the Sudbury Public Library’s Homebound Delivery service.
An avid music fan and active member of the Sudbury Opera Guild, Elsie took pride in mastering the coffee maker and regularly pondered the appropriate baked “goodie” to accompany coffee time. During Covid lockdown, she spent months watching Opera tapes on her old VCR player and challenging herself online with her Bridge Club.
A life-long learner, she introduced her grandchildren to the joy of “Jeopardy” and was delighted in her later years to earn a “Diploma in Netflix” from her grandson. She was a member of the Waters Women’s Institute executive and was known for her many hobbies including weaving (making colourful mats on her loom), baking Finn bun, board games, gardening, knitting, sporadic and inconsequential bird watching, puzzles (scorning anything less than 750 pieces) and travel – both in Canada and abroad.
She loved the water and looked forward to her two weeks spent every August on Manitoulin Island, hosting family and friends.
Elsie was full of life and energy.  She was feisty, fiercely independent, deeply caring, and generous.  Her family is grateful she was able to enjoy her last days at camp on Lake Mindemoya, swimming every morning before breakfast.
A simple graveside service will be held at the Park Lawn Cemetery on September 11th at 11:00 am. A heartfelt thanks to the staff of the ICU at Health Sciences North. Donations may be made directly to a hospice of your choice.
