JOHNSTON, Irene

June 20, 2011 92

JOHNSTON, Irene (Babs) Irwin - After a wonderful life Irene died peacefully on June 16, 2011, surrounded by her family. Born March 7th 1919 in Montreal, she married Hugh Hall Johnston June 10th 1944, having met him while in Peru. She is survived by her only child, Gail Irene Scott and her four grand-daughters: Heather, her husband Jeremy Mannella and sons Logan and Cael, Andrea and her husband Chris Koningen- Neveu, Laura and her partner David Pehleman, and Gillian, and numerous relatives. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents John and Irene Irwin, and her brother Selwyn Irwin. Babs enjoyed a privileged life, being a debutante in Montreal, showing horses throughout Quebec, and travelling Europe extensively. During WWII she was a Red Cross volunteer and driver. After marrying Hugh, they settled in Westmount to have their family and support Hugh's engineering career. After losing Hugh in 1969, an independent Babs moved to Toronto and took up Japanese brush and watercolour paintings many of which are treasured by her family. After 20 years she joined Gail and her family in Sudbury, spending many happy hours reliving her childhood with the odd scotch in hand. She was known at times to be a little crusty, but along with her wit and humour, she will be sadly missed. A Bon Voyage service will be held for Babs on Wednesday June 22, 2011 at 11:30 at the Church of the Ascension 1476 Sparks St. Sudbury. (Friends may gather at the church after 11am Wednesday). Donations to the SPCA would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME.
