With great sorrow the family of Mervin Manninen announce his peaceful passing on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at age 83. Born in Beaver Lake on May 28, 1940 to parents Vaino Manninen and Onerva Kinos Manninen, he was devoted husband to Nancy and brother Melvyn (both predeceased), loving father to Lisa and grandfather to Joey and Dylan Lanthier.
Mervin moved to Toronto with his family in 1954 where he was certified as a welder and mechanic - his lifelong passion for fixing anything motorized took off. Even in his later years, you would find him in his garage fixing the neighbours’ lawnmowers. He married Nancy Rasmus of Toronto in 1963, and daughter Lisa was born in 1969. The family relocated to Lively in 1974 where Mervin pursued a career with the Sudbury Board of Education.
He formed a band and played many gigs, and even taught his grandson Dylan a thing or two. With a deep passion for music, Mervin loved to sing and was a talented guitarist. Whether playing his first show in Toronto in the 60s or jamming at home 50 years later, he rarely missed a beat.
In his retirement years, he and beloved wife Nancy would enjoy trips south to visit their friends, heading out to the camp, and soaking up the sun during their annual trip to Cuba. Mervin was also an avid fisherman, spending many hours trolling the local lakes.
A special thank you from the family to Rudy and the Extendicare York fifth floor nursing and PSW department for their amazing care and friendship to Mervin in his later days.
Mervin will be deeply missed by his family, including by his favorite cousin Velda Kinos Varo and Mark Varo, the little soldier.
