GERALD (GERRY) MARTYN

1935 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald (Gerry) Martyn of Sudbury, Ontario on March 5, 2024.

Gerry was born in Copper Cliff, Ontario on June 24, 1935. Dear son of Stanley and Lily Martyn (both predeceased), beloved husband of Donna Martyn (Reid) (predeceased), father of Mariann Browne (Graham), Joanne LoStracco (Robert) and Reid Martyn. Proud grandfather of Matthew and Scott Browne, and Nicholas and Tiana LoStracco.

After attending both elementary and high schools in Copper Cliff, Gerry graduated from the Haileybury School of Mines in 1956. Soon thereafter he began what was to become a 35-year career with Inco, during which he performed assignments in Mines Engineering, Staff Recruiting and Employment and Environmental Control. Gerry retired from Inco in 1992.

Gerry and his wife Donna enjoyed their retirement years, during which they travelled extensively – to the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Carolinas, Texas, and Florida. Gerry was a devoted family man who was most happy when spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid reader. Gerry had a great love of music – particularly classical, British Brass Band and New Orleans Trad Jazz – his interest in which was a product of the years that he played trumpet in concert bands during his youth.

One of Gerry’s great passions was sport. He played hockey for over 50 years, playing Old-timer Hockey in Copper Cliff and Walden until he “retired” from the sport at age 60. He was also an avid golfer, tennis player, downhill and cross-country skier, having belonged to the Lively Golf Club, Sudbury Indoor Tennis Club and Walden Cross Country Ski Club. He had also been a member of both the Lively Trinity United Church and the Naughton Congregational Church.

Funeral Services will be held at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home in Sudbury, Ontario, commencing at 11 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2024. A private burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to L’Arche Sudbury. The family would also like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Extendicare York, 6th Floor, for their excellent care of Gerry.
