MATHIEU, Rita - It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Rita Mathieu, a long-time resident of Sudbury, age 88 years, at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital on June 13th, 2012. Rita was born to Clara and Joseph Roy, in Hagar, Ontario in 1924. She met and married the love of her life, Narcisse “Max“ Mathieu. They raised a family of three together and enjoyed camping and fishing at their trailer in Noelville on the Westarm of Lake Nipissing as well as trips to Northern Ontario and one memorable trip to the Canadian Rockies. Rita owned and operated Rita's Coffee Shop where her talents as a cook delighted her customers. She later went on to work at Woolco Department Store later on. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her generosity of spirit and determination and fierce independence as well as her talents in gardening and knitting, sewing and embroidery. Rita will be sadly missed by her daughters Sylvia and Linda (Ray Jones), daughter-in-law Fran (Primeau) Mathieu, grandchildren Monica (Bob) Simoneau, Remi (Barbara) Moreilli, Cindy Mathieu, Robert (Laura Payjack) Wiese, Melanie (Clifford Shawanamash) Wiese, Chris (Anna) Wiese and her brothers Jean- Paul (Mireille predeceased), Gilles, George, and sister Pauline as well as cherished great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her husband Narcisse “Max“ in 1991, her son Richard in 2002, son Robert (infancy), her parents Joseph and Clara Roy, her step mother Amanda, her siblings Cecile, Laurette, Aurele, Roger, Laurier and her brother Leon who was killed while serving in World War II. A memorial service for the late Rita Mathieu to be held on August 18th 2012 at the JACKSON & BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch Street Sudbury at 11:00 a.m. with Father Giroux officiating. Internment will take place following the service at the City of Greater Sudbury Cemetery on Second Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family would like to thank the staff of Roseview Manor in Thunder Bay for their compassion and dedication to mom over the past two years. A tree will be planted in her honour at Linda and Ray's camp property at Cloud Lake (Thunder Bay).
