It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. James McAlister announce his passing on February 9, 2023 at the age of 71. 

Jim will always be remembered by his loving wife of 45 years, Carol, his children Rachel (Michael), Rebecca (Patrick Sr.), Heather (Joel) and Graham and his grandchildren Paige, Genevieve, Patrick Jr., and Isabella-Rose.

Jim was predeceased by his parents John Curtis McAlister and Gertrude Lillian McAlister (nee Gregg) and his sister Mary.

A dedicated physician for 45 years, Jim had a passion for serving those in the North, including Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.  When not working, Jim enjoyed spending time relaxing in nature with his family at camp.

Visitations for family, friends and colleagues of Dr. McAlister will be held Tuesday February 14, from 6-8 pm. at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday February 15, 2023 at 10 am at Christ the King Church.

To support Dr. McAlister and the family, patients are asked to leave virtual condolences and light a candle through the Jackson and Barnard website. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been set up in Dr. McAlister’s name at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine to recruit and retain physicians in rural, remote locations in the North.

The family of Jim would like to thank the staff of HSN’s Cardiac Medical Unit, Dr. Hilal, Dr. Pun, Dr. Addison, Dr. Javier, Dr. Puranam and a very special thank you to Dr. Killian deBlacam for the excellent care that was provided.
