In loving memory of John “Jack” William McGill, age 98, passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North on Saturday, March 9th, 2024. Jack was born in Toronto, on January 24th, 1926. He was the son of Howard and Edith McGill of Whitby, Ontario, both predeceased.


Predeceased in 1990 by his loving wife, Shirley (nee Eckford) who was the daughter of George and Irene Eckford of Sudbury both predeceased.


Father of Deborah Walker (Alan) of Sudbury, and son John (Brian) of Fergus, Ontario. He was a loving grandfather and great grandfather.

Jack came to Sudbury in 1948 from Whitby and was employed by INCO, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. He was also a carver of wooden duck decoys.

Free masonry was a big part of John’s life, starting in Whitby in 1948 in Composite Lodge. He was District Grand Master from 1971 to 1972 of the Grand Lodge, AF and AM Ontario, and the rank of Most Excellent Grand First Principal, Royal Arch Masons of Canada in the province of Ontario 2000 to 2001. Also, serving in many other Masonic bodies across Ontario.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Walford where John was a resident the past year. Also, a special thank you to the amazing staff, nurses, PSW’s and doctors at Health Sciences North 5th especially Dr. deBlacam, and Dr. Boissonnault for their care and compassion and to his family Doctor, Dr. Graff.

At his request there will be no visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with burial alongside his wife in the Civic Cemetery. Donations to the Sudbury Food Bank would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home.
