McGILVARY, Jessie

July 23, 2012 90

McGILVARY, Jessie - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jessie Kellock McGilvary, 90 years, on Saturday, July 21, 2012. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, Jess was the beloved wife of Norm McGilvary, predeceased, with whom she shared 34 years of laughter and magic. Loving mother of Lennie D. McGilvary of Calgary. Predeceased by her parents, John and Ann (Sutar) Lennie, and five of the Lennie clan - brothers, David, Peter and Andrew, and sisters, Elizabeth (MacKinnon), and Margaret (Taylor). Lovingly remembered by brother, John Lennie and sisters, Nan Duval and Gladys Campbell, all of Sudbury. Jess was a favourite aunt to several nieces and nephews, many of whom learned to swim or enjoyed their first barbequed hotdog at her home on Lake Nepahwin. She was a loving and supportive lifelong friend and neighbour to Leslie VanClieaf and second mother to her girls. She will be sadly missed by good friend, Cheryl Murray. In 1929, eight-year- old Jessie, her mother and six siblings left their beloved Scotland and made the trans- Atlantic crossing to Canada, where they rejoined their father who had gone ahead to settle the family in Sudbury. The clan was soon complete with the arrival of two more girls and Jess often spoke fondly of her chaotic, crowded but laughter-filled childhood on Morris Street. In 1949, Jess married Norm McGilvary and together they shared a happy life surrounded by family and good friends. When her mother became too frail to live on her own, Jess, Norm and son Lennie opened their home to the proud Scotswoman until her death in 1957. A true people person, Jess enjoyed working with the public. She was a talented curler and will be equally remembered for her exploits both on and off the ice at the Sudbury Curling Club. In recent years, failing health forced a move to St. Joseph's Villa where Jess continued to entertain residents with the odd off colour joke or story from her long and active life. She was especially fond of the caring staff and weekly activities group in the Villa's Sunnyside neighbourhood. A true matriarch of the Lennie clan, Jess's humour, caring and delicious shortbread will be missed for generations to come. As per Jessie's wishes, there will be no public visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with interment at the Park Lawn Cemetery. Donations to the Make a Wish Foundation or PetSave would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the LOUGHEED FUNERAL HOME. To light a memorial candle, flowers, donations or messages of condolences available on-line at www.lougheed.org
