PAUL, Mary

February 8, 2012 99

PAUL, Mary Doris - It is with deep regret that the family announces the passing of Mary Doris Paul in her 99th year. She was born in Sudbury in June 19th, 1913, the daughter of Sudbury pioneers George Thomas Paul and Justine (Burke) Paul. She was predeceased by her sister Eveline Somers (Manse), her brothers George Paul (Gertrude), Jack Paul (Muriel), Bernard Paul and Len Paul (Irene) and niece Marie (Somers). Doris began her education at the Old Brown School in Sudbury. After completing high school at St. Joseph's Academy in North Bay, she attended the Normal School in that city graduating in 1932. Her first teaching assignment was at S.S. # 2 Dill where she had responsibility for teaching pupils from grades 1-9. This was challenging as she was not much older than some of her pupils. She taught for many years at St. Aloysius School in Sudbury. She left the Sudbury Catholic School Board's employ in 1966 to work for the Ontario Ministry of Education as an Inspector assigned to Ottawa. At the time when men dominated this field, she was a pioneer for women's struggle for equality. Her interest in children with learning disabilities led her to become the person in charge of a project to take remedial and diagnostic help in isolated schools in Northern Ontario. A trailer load of equipment would be sent to a school in the North. She would follow in her car in all kinds of weather. Over the years she worked on university degrees, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education and a Masters Degree in English Literature. Education was her life. In addition to her many accomplishments, she was the mainstay of her parents in their later years. She always maintained a keen interest in civic and church affairs. She is lovingly remembered by her nieces Lois (Somers) Venzina of Brockville, Sister Catherine Paul of St. Joseph's Motherhouse, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, Carol (Paul) Carroll of North Bay and Barbara (Paul) McCourt and her husband Gerry of London, nephew Jack Paul of Otterburn Park, Quebec and her many great nephews and nieces including John Noble and his wife Brigitte of Sault Ste. Marie and Shirley (Somers) Ferguson and her husband George of Sudbury. A Funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King Church, 30 Beech Street, Sudbury on Friday, February 10th, 2012 at 10am. Family will receive friends at the church after 9am Friday. Interment at the Sudbury Roman Catholic Cemetery. Donations to St. Joseph's Villa or Christ the King Church would be appreciated. (Arrangements entrusted to the JACKSON & BARNARD FUNERAL HOME). To light a memorial candle, flowers, donations or messages of condolences available on-line at www.lougheed.org
