RYAN, Jerome (Joe) 1943 – 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family announces Jerome’s passing on October 5, 2023, at Extendicare York in Sudbury, at the age of 80 years.

Born in Englehart Ontario, Jerome was the son of Allan and Alacoque Ryan (nee Sullivan).  Predeceased by his sisters Marlene (Cecil), Adrienne (infant); and brothers Leo, Kevin (Carolyn), Morris (Margaret, Patricia) Michael and Anthony (infant).  He is survived by his sister Cathy Oja (Erik) of Naughton, and his brother Urban (Mary) of North Bay.

Jerome moved to Massey for employment, and there he met and married the love of his life, Janie (nee Steinke) on October 27, 1973.  They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this month.  He was the immensely proud father of his two hardworking and talented sons, Jeremy (wife Susan Mullen) of Espanola, special Grandpa to Eric Vanier; and Andrew (wife Patti Webb) of Whitefish.

He was also the brother-in-law of Judy Imhoff (Ronnie, Gerry), Barry Steinke (Joanne) and Ken Steinke (Janet).

Jerome and Janie proudly built their own home on Lee Valley Road, where they had settled for more than 40 years until they moved to Espanola for a brief period of time last November.  Jerome was employed by the Township of Sables Spanish River for 30 years, retiring in 2009.

Following his retirement, he spent time puttering around in his yard, and taking his dog Mimi for walks.  Jerome’s true passion was spending time with Janie working in their numerous flower and vegetable gardens.  He took great pride in his crops and was especially proud of his potatoes. People from all over the area would stop by to purchase their produce, where he enjoyed having long chats.

He fussed over his cedar hedges, showed great attention to cutting his lawn, was meticulous over trimming his field of Christmas trees that he sold to select customers, watering Janie’s flowers and plants in their greenhouse, feeding the birds and other critters; but was most happy when friends or family stopped in for a visit, especially with cookies.

The family would like to thank the Staff at Extendicare York, especially the 3rd and 5th floors, for their wonderful care they provided to Jerome.

Cards of sympathy for Janie may be sent to:  182 Wilson Crescent, Espanola, ON  P5E 1E1.

As per Jerome’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral services.
