In loving memory of Sunnie “Stewart” Shawanda 82 years. Born in South Bay in Wikwemikong on August 17th, 1941, began his journey to the spirit world on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024.

He will be sadly missed and loving remembered by his loving partner and best friend of 36 years, Donna Gollan.

Cherished father of Debi Shawanda, Shane Gollan (Candice), Robert Gollan (Kim), and Kelly Martinez. Adored grandfather of Rob, Zachary, Joey, Kyle (Erica), and Sara (Preston). Loving Papa of Erika (Theo), Amber (Brandon), Tristin (Cailyn), and Kodi (Chris), and great grandfather of Lydia, Troy, Harper, Hudson, and Kayden. Special Chi Papa to Brock, Raeya, and Sophia.

Predeceased by his parents George and Nora Shawanda (nee Kitchikeg) and siblings Violet and Wilfred. Survived by his sisters Vera, June, and Bea, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, family, and friends. Best friend of 70 years to Franklin Odjig. He will always be remembered as “Uncle Stewy” to many.

Stewart was a residential school survivor. Playing hockey in residential school eventually led him to a semi professional hockey career where he played in Port Colborne, Reno, Nevada, Las Vegas, and Europe. He also worked as a dealer at many casinos, retiring at Casino Rama. He could talk sports and stats for hours. He was a proud and dedicated Golden Knights & 49ers fan. Sundays, he spent watching NASCAR and was a die-hard Jimmy Johnson fan. He enjoyed sitting by the water in Point Grondine, which was his happy place. A family camp turned into home, where many gathered, and many memories were made. He also loved his travel trailer that took him and Donna all over Turtle Island and to many NASCAR Races.

Stewart truly loved life. He was always up for an adventure. He would make conversation with anyone in sight and often share stories of the places he’d been and the things he’s done. He always stood out in a crowd with his white cowboy hat and his friendly demeanor. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He’d give you the shirt off his back. He loved his family, and that’s what made him the happiest.

In the words of Stewy, “Mah-jaug-ah-jaug”

At his request there will be no visitation.
