SHEWCHUK, Viola

November 23, 2021 92 years old

Mom (1)

We said goodbye to our Mother, Viola E. Shewchuk (nee Newton) in her 92nd year on November 23, 2021 in Sudbury, Ontario. Viola is predeceased by the love of her life, John Shewchuk, husband of 46 years. Predeceased also by parents, Wilfred and Theresa Newton (nee Wilson); and siblings, Patrick Newton, Jean Orbanski (Stan), Rose “Polly” Terrell Becking Lewis, Ida Newton, Sarah Gervais (Aurel) and Dianne Chene (Claude). She is survived by sister, Simone Bourre (Edgar), and children, Rodney Shewchuk (Lisa McMurray) and Debra Shewchuk (Guy Jolicoeur). Grandmother to Brenna Shewchuk Storey (Neal Storey), Christian Jolicoeur (Melina Garneau), Evan Jolicoeur, and Martin Jolicoeur (Paige Matheson). Great-grandmother to Edyn and Scarlett Storey.

Viola was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great -grandmother; roles which she played beautifully and lovingly. A quiet soul who, like many of her generation, embraced making a cherished home for her husband and children. She played homage to our father’s Ukrainian heritage by cooking up all the culture’s favourite foods. We had fresh baking after dinner and especially loved her famous cinnamon buns and cherry cheesecake. Our parents were avid dancers who loved to “cut a rug” on many weekends. They loved to host card and Rummoli parties, as well as rousing live music nights.

Viola’s latter two decades were shared with her partner, Murray, predeceased. They enjoyed parking the motorhome on the French River and sharing time with her sisters’ families.

Recently she entered Pioneer Manor and we wish to thank the caregivers in her home area, York. The health care workers, RPNs and RNs were exceptional. Sincerest thanks to her closest aides, Yvonne and Maria. Your compassion in caring for our mother will not be forgotten and reinforced the notion that your role in the health care system is vital.
