SHRIGLEY, Leslie

August 1, 2021 76 years old

Shrigley, Leslie (1)

In loving memory of Leslie Harold Shrigley. Passed away peacefully at home on August 1st, 2021 at the age of 76 years, with his wife and daughter by his side.

Beloved husband of Joan Shrigley (Marshall). Born and raised in Copper Cliff to parents Noel and Hilda Shrigley (both predeceased). Loving father of Erin Monahan (husband Sean) and Mark Shrigley. Devoted grandfather to his three grandsons, Austin, Connor, and Jacob Monahan. Dear brother of Reginald Shrigley. Special uncle to Todd and Bradley Shrigley.

Les worked at Vale as a Materials Coordinator in the Maintenance Department, retiring in 2001. He was a proud life member of Lockerby Legion Branch 564, where he held numerous executive positions and was well-known for his high standards, exemplary practices, and meticulous attention to detail. He was also a proud member of Walden Seniors, where he rekindled old friendships and made many new ones. He volunteered his time in many community events including the Special Olympics, figure skating competitions, Dragon Boat Races, Track and Field, and primary school speech competitions, just to name a few. He also volunteered for many years at 2964 Walden Irish Cadet Corps.

Les was a dedicated family man who enjoyed family functions and took great pride in all of their accomplishments. He was his grandkids’ biggest cheerleader in all their sports or school functions. He loved to putter around in his shed, building birdhouses and making airplanes out of pop cans. He had a love for ice cream that few would understand. Soft ice cream, hard ice cream, it didn’t matter, he loved them all. There was always time for ice cream.

Les was a kind man who portrayed strength and courage as he fought his recent illness.

Special thanks to everyone who helped Les’s end of life journey be more comfortable. Thanks to Dr. Susil for your genuine concern and ongoing support; to Dr. Shehata and Dr. Young who put forth their best efforts to treat this unrelenting illness; to Dr. Singh – you truly are a blessing to those who have the privilege of having you as their doctor. Your compassion and care was truly exemplary. To the Pain and Symptom Management team, including the secretary who welcomed him to every appointment; to Asha and Erin who always took the extra time to genuinely listen and call to see how he was doing, thank you. Les always enjoyed those visits to see his nurses. To all the nurses on 4 North, the chemo and radiation department, the Maison McCulloch Hospice, and Bayshore, we thank you for your tender care. Dr. Walton, your patience, kindness, and calming voice carried us through the most difficult times. To Dustin, Les’s primary care nurse at home, you are a gifted young man. Thank you for going the extra mile to answer a text, a call, and visit daily to manage his illness. He always looked forward to talking to you about his hobbies and pop can airplanes. Knowing you were on your way to the house when things were getting tough, always put his mind at ease.

As per Les’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice or Northeast Cancer Center would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
