Sime, Martin “Marty” John (1942-2023)

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Martin “Marty” Sime in Sudbury on Tuesday April 25th, 2023, at the age of 80 years.

Survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen Sime (née Sheppard). Dear father of Tammy-Lynn Marrelli (Tony) andTroy Sime (Nicole). He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Riley, Caelan, Emilia, Amanda, Patrick and his great-grandchildren Emma and Alexander. Son of the late John “Jack” and the late Lucienne “Lucy” Sime (née Cayen). Survived by his sisters Bonnie Duff (Monty), Heather Duff (Tom) and his brothers James Sime and Robert Sime (Cindy). He will missed by many family members and friends.

Marty was a remarkable and accomplished man. He led an extremely full life, that was spent with the people he loved, doing the things he loved. He will be remembered for his great sense of humour and quick wit.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 19. Though not his life-long career, he spoke with fondness of his time spent serving. After the Air force, he set his sights on teaching, a calling in which he took great price. With a career spanning four decades, he taught at Garson-Falconbridge Secondary School, Nickel District Secondary School, and finally Lockerby Composite School. The number of lives he touched as a teacher is reflected in the stories shared by many, many past students over the years. We have been privileged to see firsthand the impact he has had on countless people.

Marty and Helen spent many years travelling, often with friends, to various destinations around the world and even spent time sailing the Great Lakes, skiing some of the best hills and golfing some great courses in various spots on this planet. In between all of this, he found time to coach and referee high school basketball, referee college and university basketball and when called, referee NCAA basketball in the US.  A jack-of-all-trades, he loved woodworking, building, gardening, and the list goes on from there. Of course, we cannot forget one of his favourite pastimes – any time spent at camp on Lake Penage, which he called home.

This is just a sample of a life lived to the fullest. There is so much more, but those are memories to be shared at his Celebration of Life, to be held at some point in the next few months.

Marty, if in the end it’s not about the years in your life, but the life in your years, you have outshone us all. Yours is a long life well-lived.
