June 3rd, 1950- October 11th, 2020

The family announces with great sorrow Hans’ passing on October 11th, 2020 at the age of 71 years at the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury, Ontario. Son of the late Hans-Jack Straub and the late Carmela Straub of Val Caron. Loving father of Kristan Straub (Jennifer) of Sturgeon Falls, Daneilla and Marika (Russell) Straub of Sudbury and of Sabrina Tanguay (Darcy) of Sarnia. Dear brother of Mirella Straub of Sudbury and Marisa (Dana) Straub of Garson. Cherished grandfather of Brandon, Griffin, Mackenzie, Haley, Eriksen, Aiden, Olivia, Alexis, Kobe, and Cameron. Loving uncle to Angie and David and the late Kathy. Hans was born in Eglisau, Switzerland and immigrated with his family to Canada at 5-years-old. He worked as an instrumentation technologist and first began working at Falconbridge in 1968. He later moved to Sarnia and spent many years working at SNC-Lavalin. After retirement, Hans enjoyed spending his time at his camp in Crystal Falls enjoying the peacefulness of the Sturgeon River. At this time of year, he could be seen hunting moose around Murray Lake and enjoying pumpkin pie! Hans was the quiet fan who loved to watch his family compete in sports from his daughter’s softball games in Sarnia, to his grandchildren’s hockey, figure skating, and basketball. According to Eriksen “he was always there when I asked him to come!” You could always find Hans with his Erlenmeyer-shaped mug, glasses on top of his head, and shorts at any time of year! The family wishes to thank Hans’ incredible health care teams-Dr. Christopher Nizzero and the on-call doctors and nurses working at Health Sciences North. They would especially like to thank Dr. Walton and the compassionate and caring nurses of the Maison McCulloch Hospice. Words of gratitude are not enough for Dr. Jordan Herst and Dr. Lacey Pitre and the staff at the Northeast Cancer Centre who took care of Hans as he valiantly battled cancer, since being first diagnosed in 2013. Hans always appreciated that his appointments ran on time. A special thank you to the drivers from the Northern Cancer Foundation; they weren’t just drivers for Hans, they became friends during his many treatments. A celebration of life will be held at a later date but all who knew him are invited to share in a Drambuie or Tequila toast in his honour! In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northern Cancer Foundation or Maison McCulloch Hospice can be made by cheque or online at ncfsudbury.com or https://maisonsudburyhospice.org/donate/
