TODD, Peter

March 7, 2012 74

TODD, Peter - Peter gently slipped away from us on Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 at Pioneer Manor in Sudbury after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease; he was 74. Peter was the beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth (“Eilish“)(nee O'Loan) for 43 years. He was the dearly loved father of Claire (Stephen Downes) and Liam (Kim Lively), and the cherished granddad of Connor and Dillon Todd, and Liam and Sarah Downes. Peter is also remembered by many family members in the UK. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1937, Peter apprenticed as an electrician at the royal naval shipyards in Rosyth before taking electrical and mechanical engineering degrees at Heriot- Watt University in Edinburgh. After graduating, Peter worked in Cameroon, Scotland, and England before settling in Canada in 1969. In 1969, Peter started his career with INCO as a staff engineer in the Copper Cliff Smelter complex, where he eventually became the superintendent of maintenance. Peter left the smelter in 1978 to become maintenance superintendent at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant and the new Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery. In 1990, Peter moved to the central engineering services group where he worked until his retirement in 1998. In 1973, Peter was the first INCO engineer to become a part-time instructor in the engineering program at Laurentian University. Two evenings a week for nearly 18 years, Peter could be found teaching mechanical engineering and design to second-year students. Peter was quietly but actively involved with Alcoholics Anonymous for over 30 years. He sponsored many, and gave much of his time to help fellow recovering alcoholics in the community. It was rare for him to miss a weekly meeting, attending even as he traveled for business and on vacation. Peter loved exploring the rugged landscape and waterways of his adopted Northern Ontario home, and he looked forward each year to a solo canoe trip in the wilderness areas north of Sudbury. His spirit travels there now. Cremation has occurred. Memorial visitation at  JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME,  233 Larch Street, on Friday, March 9th, 2012 from 2-5pm. Funeral mass at St Patrick's Church, 39 Walford Road, on Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at 10am; reception to follow the service. Donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Sudbury- Manitoulin will be gratefully acknowledged.
