VARY, John Angus - (1949-2013) - With profound sadness the family of John Vary announces his passing on January 14, 2013. After living two years with ALS, he passed away peacefully at home with his wife Lauren and nephew Jackson at his side. John was a fourth-generation Vary in mining. He was born in Timmins, Ontario April 27, 1949 to Barbara (Langworthy) and the late George Vary. He attended Michigan Technological University, graduating as a Mining Engineer. At Tech he met the love of his life Lauren (Kallio) and they married in 1972. After three years at Dumbarton Mine in Werner Lake, Ontario, John & Lauren moved to Sudbury in 1975, when John began his rewarding 31-year career at Falconbridge. He loved his work and after retiring from Falconbridge (later Xstrata), he worked part-time for Laurentian University Mining Engineering and then for NORCAT, bringing together mining and research. John took enormous pride in his children, Jason, Neil and Beth. He was a loving and devoted father. He attended every hockey practice, game, and horseback riding lesson. He supported their goals, dreams and interests unconditionally. He was an avid woodworker and artist. He loved the outdoors, camping and canoeing, skiing, cooking, and traveling overseas. Every summer, he planted and tended a backyard vegetable garden. He and Lauren enjoyed dancing and shared a passion for researching family history. John is survived by his wife and best friend Lauren, son Jason (Karen), son Neil (Janet Greene) and daughter Beth (boyfriend Ben Nissan), mother Barbara Vary. Dearest brother to sisters Lynne (Alan) Bisset, Sharon (Hans) Schroeder, Patricia Vary (Ed Najgebauer) and April Clement. John will be missed by his dearest and precious grandchildren, Claire and Owen Vary. John was much loved by his extended family. A memorial service for John will be held at JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch Street in Sudbury on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013 at 3 pm in the R.J. Barnard Chapel. John's family will receive friends from 1 to 3 pm. Cremation by the Parklawn Crematorium, with burial in the Civic Cemetery planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to Maison Vale Hospice Outreach Program would be appreciated.
